Saint-Gobain building products subsidiary CertainTeed LLC revealed plans Tuesday to add new recycling equipment at its gypsum plant in Palatka, FL that will help the company to increase the amount of recycled materials in wallboard products manufactured there. The $1.1 million project is also expected to cut the location’s carbon dioxide emissions by 2,260 tn/yr.

“In Palatka and at all of our manufacturing sites in North America, our team will continue to aggressively pursue opportunities to maximize our company’s positive impact, for our customers and the communities where we operate, while minimizing our environmental footprint,” said Jay Bachmann, Vice President and General Manager of CertainTeed Interior Products Group, in a company release. “The new technology in Palatka will allow us to increase the recycled content in our products, reduce our carbon dioxide emissions at the plant, and strengthen our operations at a time of unprecedented consumer demand for gypsum wallboard in the southeastern United States.”

The new technology will grind waste gypsum and waste paper into fine particles, which are captured, sorted, and used as materials in the plant’s production process. Scrap materials are generated when production lines are started up or shut down, or when production equipment is reconfigured to produce different sizes of wallboard.

CertainTeed’s plant in Palatka will be less reliant on outside raw materials and reduce its overall carbon footprint through the project. Opened in 2001, the facility occupies over 100 acres and has a headcount of 150 workers.
